Procrastination tip: keep on starting

I'm returning to my "Procrastination tips" series, with one of the tips that I recall most often.

"Keep on starting, and finishing will take care of itself" - I've read this advice on The Now Habit, a book I like very much and to which I've referred before.

This is simple yet powerful advice, and especially useful for long projects.

Keeping our eyes on the end of the project may cause us to feel overwhelmed. "There's so much work ahead!", "I'll never finish!" - thoughts like these frequently cross my mind when I focus on the idea of finishing my thesis.

But really, all I can do now is start - and then start again. If I regularly keep on starting, eventually I'll realize I've finished. This is what happened with the chapters of my thesis that are now finished. Yay!

So, when feeling overwhelmed by a long and big task, remember the mantra: "Keep on starting, and finishing will take care of itself" ;)

I would love to hear about your experience with this (or other) procrastination tip in the comments section.

See you soon! :)

P.S. Talking about work... I've realized I need to spend more time on my thesis. So, among other things, I decided I'll be posting less frequently - but at least once a week. I may not comment as frequently on other blogs, but I'll keep reading attentively. I apologize for this and hope that you'll continue stopping by :)

Mini decluttering challenges

I confess. I've been procrastinating a little bit on posting here. I started writing a review of a book I read recently, but it got very complicated as I wanted to capture ALL the important concepts of the book. It was getting long and I wasn't even at the middle of the book. I'm definitely not good at summarizing...

Anyway, I may eventually finish (and simplify) the review.

For today I just wanted to share that I've started a new challenge for myself. As I've said before, I'm slowly decluttering my physical environment. I just have to put something away each day. Anything! It may be something as simple as a piece of paper. To motivate myself I'm now taking an initial picture of a (very) small space: like a shelf. Then I slowly focus on that space, until it looks good (i.e. clean, uncluttered and organized). When I'm finished I'll take a final picture and I'll share the 'before' and 'after' here on the blog. I'm calling these my "Mini decluttering challenges". The first small space is almost-almost finished. Here's the initial photo:

Ugly, right?

See you soon! I promise I'll come back with a neater shelf  ;)

Sunday in pictures

This Sunday I woke up pretty late (as usual).

I had lunch with family...

And off I went for the weekly Math tutoring session with my 17 year old cousin.

Then off I went to Aveiro to meet B!

I arrived earlier which, honestly, is quite unusual for me. So I waited, looking at the Ria...

Until B. arrived!

We left our cars behind and began our long walk...

The lovely ducklings being fed by the toddler caught our attention :)

And the young people playing football in the green field...

And we walked (yep, we're really walking)...

And I looked at this statue, which frequently grabs my attention...

We passed near the Buga's stand...

And along the bridge, towards Forum open air shopping...

And discovered Valentine's day is all over Forum shopping!

Meanwhile, the Ria was still near us...

We were hungry, so we headed to our favorite café-pastelaria.

Unfortunately there was no table left for us. So we tried this other one...

With full tummies, our walk continued through Praça do Peixe...

Stepping on various marine motifs...

And suddenly B. had the camera on his hands!

But rapidly it was getting dark...

And the Ria was beautiful, against the rosy sky :)

I'm sure the mermaid agrees!

We then walked past beautiful Art Nouveau buildings...

And not long after it was dark! (Ok, I may have jumped forward a little bit.)

Pretty dark...

Later we had dinner, B. watched Benfica and I read! And, I must confess, I was a bit lazy to continue using my camera.

....The End....

P.S.: Hope you all had a great weekend!
